Conventional eyewear bends light rays and distorts vision at the lens periphery, but XYZ Optics® maps the full lens contour to the human eye, ensuring razor-sharp vision at all angles.

Asymmetrical

Jargon Rating= 4) - This really only applies to alpineboards. It is generally taken as read that it is harder to turn heelside. With a stiff Alpine board it is even harder, so to aid the rider the sidecut on the heelside of an Alpine board is sometimes exaggerated and set back to the tail of the board. Hence the board is no longer symmetrical, it is now asymmetrical. . See also A&E

Construction

(Jargon Rating= 4) - This relates to what the ski/board is built out of. Traditional construction is several thin layers of maple tree wood glued together, creating a very strong laminated board. Newer materials like foam are used to make the boards lighter, and carbon fibre to make it stronger etc. Included in this, is what the base (the bit that sits on the snow) is made out of. There are several grades of PTEX that are used ranging from the cheap extruded variety (hard to damage, easy to repair, but not very fast) to the expensive P4000 graphite or Electra that seems frictionless (but easy to damage and difficult to repair). A construction term, Sandwich is the older type of construction, where the board is made out of layers (like a sandwich), where the edge square, easy to build but leads to delamination.

Flight Baseplate

(Jargon Rating= 2) - The Flow Flite baseplate consists of a POM injected material with vulcanized rubber shock pads for a comfortable non-slip ride.

Flight Highback

(Jargon Rating= 3) - The Flite highback offers a reduced weight and a more all around flex. A responsive design that is perfect for all types of riding.

Floatation

(Jargon Rating= 1) - On a hard surface (like a groomed piste) a snowboard could be viewed a lot like a car in its handling characteristics. But when a board moves onto freshly fallen powder snow, that analogy disappears. The snowboard turns into a (badly designed) speedboat. As long as the board is moving forwards, the scoop is large enough and the riders weight is set back far enough (so the nose is higher than the tail), the snow will go underneath the board to keep it near or at the surface. If the rider slows down, by turning too quickly for example, or the rider leans forward the board will sink into the snow and stop. With reference to a boards statistics, better floatation usually equates to a lighter and/or bigger board. The bigger a surface area a board has, the easier it is to get powder underneath it, hence the easier it is to float.

Footbed

(Jargon Rating= 1) - Ski boot foot beds are inserts (orthotics) molded to bring the load bearing parts of the foot in sync with the gravitational force of the skeletal system. This is often compared to how the foundation (feet) of a house carries the weight of the house through the studs (bones) in the walls. Ski boot foot beds are molded from a semi-rigid material which distributes the forces developed on the foot during a ski turn. This relieves the soreness and fatigue that foot abnormalities can cause.

Foward Lean Adjustors

(Jargon Rating= 4) - Gives you the ability to change the setting on your bindings so you can lean forward.

Freeflex Rail

(Jargon Rating= 4) - Instead of the standard inserts for the binding screws there is a rail with nuts that can be moved around for the binding to be positioned fit the rider's needs exactly. The only truly free stance positioning on the market. No increments, no insert-puzzle. Adjust your stance without having to remove your binding. Free-floating construction enables the board to flex without insert stress points in the base.

Freeride

(Jargon Rating= 3) - An expressive all terrain skiing or snowboarding style. Also what happens if you don't pay your taxi driver

Freestyle

(Jargon Rating= 2) - To ski or snowboard with fancy manoeuvres. Why not have fun and bet your friend that they can't do a 360 degree reverse spin on a snowboard without letting go of their pint.

Fun

(Jargon Rating= 0) - Recreation is the employment of time in a non-profitable way, in many ways also a therapeutic refreshment of one's body or mind. While leisure is more likely a form of entertainment or rest, recreation is active and participatory, but in a refreshing and diverting manner. As people in the world's wealthier regions lead increasingly sedentary life styles, the need for recreation has grown. The rise of so called active vacations exemplify this. Recreation, play, and fun are not the preserve of humans; nearly all creatures indulge in this to some extent. Play is essential for the development of skills, the most basic of which are motor skills in young creatures and fighting for chavs.

High Mass Impact

(Jargon Rating=2) - Oakley premium eyewear surpasses the protection requirements for high-mass impact, as defined by The American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Part of an industrial standard called ANSI Z87.1, the high-mass impact test requires that the lens be hit by a 500-gram metal spike (over a pound of weight) dropped from a height of 51.2 inches (over four feet). To pass the test, no frame parts or lens fragments that could damage the eye may be ejected during impact. This test is designed to analyze protection against relatively heavy objects travelling at low speeds. Real-world scenarios include being hit by the tip of a ski or hitting a branch while mountain biking. The unique materials and geometries of Oakley's lens/frame combinations allow the company's premium eyewear to exceed the protection requirements of the high-mass impact test.

High Velocity Impact

(Jargon Rating=3) - Oakley premium eyewear also surpasses the ANSI Z87.1 test for high-velocity impact protection. For this test, a pneumatic cannon accelerates a quarter-inch steel shot to 102 miles per hour. The lens is targeted straight on from three different heights, and at seven different angles. To pass the high-velocity test, no contact between the lens and eye is permitted during impact. In addition, no frame parts or lens fragments that could damage the eye may be ejected during impact.

Highback

(Jargon Rating=2) - A stiff moulded support behind the heel and up the calf area. This allows the rider to apply pressure and effect a "heelside" turn.

Hot Spots

(Jargon Rating=4) - Points in the boot where the laces are tighter than the rest can be avoided by boa technology.

Hybritech Construction

(Jargon Rating=6) - Hybritech is the most effective way to make a snowboard. It takes a cap tip and tail and blends it into a sidewall along the running surface. K2 takes the time to create complex moulds and parts that bring these twp features together. It gives you low swing weight and optimized turn initiation at the ends combined with durability and damping on the running surface. This design produces high-performance boards that excel across any variety of mountain terrain, snow conditions and riding styles.

Hyper Carbon

I

I-Flex

(Jargon Rating= 3) - The large cut-outs of the 3D Powerstrap provide ideal freestyle flex and superior boot fit. The I-Flex Powerstrap combines contoured EVA molded materials and a streamlined design to reduce the overall weight by 20%.

IBC Binding

(Jargon Rating= 4) - The IBC Bindings easy, drill- less installation, free flexing toe and heel, and integrated graphics have been known cause the following common side effects: less time shopping and more time on the hill, smoother overall ski flex, and an increased risk of permanently improving your skiing.

IBX Binding

(Jargon Rating= 5) - The IBX Binding is fixed at the heel. With a floating toe piece, energy is driven down and forward, resulting in a powerful turn initiation and energy transfer. Further aiding this powerful energy transfer is its single piece design, which reduces energy dissipation with less moving parts. Combined with the plates torsionally rigid nylon construction, IBX is an extremely responsive system. The available Marker Piston in front of the toe dampens unwanted vibrations by absorbing shock and controlling tip rebound.

Intelligence Chip

(Jargon Rating= 7) - For total technology geeks looking for the ultimate we also put Intellifibre and a microchip into the Intelligence i.C.T. The chip amplifies the energy before it fires back. The effect on the board's performance is like turning up the volume on your favourite download. Pretty exciting stuff.

Intelligence Fiber

(Jargon Rating= 6) - It all started as technology developed to reduce vibrations while increasing the thrust of helicopter rotor blades. Head think that the snowboard application is even better. Cruising at slowing speeds the board reacts neutrally. The harder you push the speed and the more vibrations you create, the more energy is generated by the Intellifibres. This energy is captured and fired back to the fibres in five-thousandths of a second so they stiffen up and increase torsional stability. This means that you can power into a turn and hold an edge like you're on rails and get stability when you're going flat out. Also see Intelligence Chip.

Intelligence Quick Pack

(Jargon Rating= 7) - See Intelligence fibres and Intelligence Chip

Intelligence Technology

(Jargon Rating= 7) - See Intelligence fibres and Intelligence Chip

L

Law, The

(Jargon Rating= 4) -Also known as Laura- A funny little 15 year old who used to help with the Filarinskis website. She insisted that her shortness was due to only being 15 but frankly, I don't trust it. Very fast at typing, but not too quick of the mark when it comes to thinking means that if she has a lack of cognitive ability. She is 'The Law.'

Lens Rake

(Jargon Rating= 5) - Rake refers to the curve of the lens from top to bottom.

Lens Transition

(Jargon Rating= 2) - When light passes through a sunglass lens, some wavelengths are reflected by the surface and others are absorbed by the lens material. The light that actually reaches your eye is a measure of the lens transmission level. With Oakley's wide range of optional lens hues, you can choose to have as little as 9% of available light reach your eye, or as much as 93%. Molecules in the lens absorb specific wavelengths of light, preventing them from reaching your eye. With the full array of Oakley lens colour options, you can select a precisely tuned level of absorption that maximizes performance for any light condition.

Lens Wrap

(Jargon Rating= 2) - Wrap refers to the curve of the lens from left to right.

Lip

(Jargon Rating= 2) - The acute angle at which the wall terminates on a snowboarding pipe.

Liquidmetal

(Jargon Rating= 4) - Liquidmetal's unique structure remains unchanged during the turn and returns the power at a ratio of 1:1. This gives the ski perceptibly more vitality. Skis made of materials with conventional molecular structures lose more power during turns as a result of heat and strong ski deformation.

M

Marker M1

(Jargon Rating= 5) - The new K2 Marker M1 Ski Binding System in 2006 sees the standard for performance and integrated industrial design. Central to the new design are the M1 titanium hubs that are imbedded into the core of the ski under foot and enveloped in light weight composite. This allows for a more balanced and centred fixture point. Fewer moving parts generates more power to the edge, quicker and more efficiently than conventional systems. Additionally, the design of the M1 toe and heel spacers are 30% wider than other rail systems thus extending binding contact points closer to the edge of the ski. The design increases leverage and power transfer. A fixed heel and floating toe drives power down and forward while still allowing the ski to flex freely, in a more consistent round are thus maximizing the skis performance. A simple two step process is all it takes to slide and fix the drill-less M1 system on the ski quickly and effortlessly. State-of-the-art engineering and sleek integrated design makes the K2 M1 a lighter, more powerful high performance system.

Marker M2

(Jargon Rating= 5) - In 2006, K2 will also introduce a new integrated K2/Marker Ski- Binding System M2. The M2 is an integrated binding technology engineered by K2 and Marker utilizing-design attributes of the IBX system from the past. The M2 is designed for for high performance and recreational skiers alike, utilizing a floating toe and a fixed heel design to generate more power, precision and quickness underfoot. The M2 systems' sleek design is graphically integrated into the look of the ski in both the Comanche and T:Nine series.

(Jargon Rating= 6) - These man made creatures live the tip of the skis and rebuild them if they happen to break. They have been known to evolve the ski into something better, possibly a snow mobile or its less useful counterpart the golf buggy. They can also be used to fix broken limbs and clean up all your spills. Be careful if you accidentely swallow one because it might turn you into a toaster.

Nanotechnology

(Jargon Rating= 5) - A science which enables individual atoms and molecules to be processed to form ultra-thin coatings which are up to 50 times harder and lighter than steel. The space and automotive industries have been successfully exploiting the enormous advantages of this cutting-edge technology for some time now. Atomic put it onto the snow for the first time in 2005 in its Izor models, once more proving its leadership in high-tech ski construction.

Check out the different Oakley Lenses Here or Filarinski's full range of glasses here.

Off-Piste

(Jargon Rating= 4) - Areas of snow not marked as official pistes and where there is no grooming. Good skiers and boarders aspire to ride off-piste but, in Europe, do so at their own risk - off-piste slopes are not marked, protected from avalanches or patrolled. Going out of bounds, away from the prepared runs (and the ski patrols) can mean great fresh unexplored runs.

Ollie

(Jargon Rating= 4)- A move borrowed from skateboarding where you lift your front foot first and spring off of the tail of the board with your back foot as a means of jumping into the air.

Overshaped Sidecuts

(Jargon Rating= 2) - Deeper sidecuts for autocarve effect

Oversized Sensifit

Pet

(Jargon Rating= 0) - Pets can be fun, but don't expect them to go skiing with!

Phat

(Jargon Rating= 2) - A very cool ski. Not to be confused with a "fat ski" which is one that has eaten too many pies.

Photochromic

(Jargon Rating= 4) - Whether you're golfing, mountain biking or pounding pavement on a training run at dawn, you can't maintain peak performance unless your eyes keep up with your environment. That's why Oakley partnered with Transitions Optical to create lenses that darken and lighten automatically. They help you adapt to changing light conditions while filtering out 100% of ultraviolet light (UV). Not to mention the added confidence of having lenses that aren't too dark when the sun pulls a disappearing act, or too light when it knifes through the clouds.

PILOT Back-Side

(Jargon Rating= 2) - Low profile to get a perfect snow feel. Light magnesium chassis, perfect integration of Spaceframe and Pilot.

Piste

(Jargon Rating= 3) - Another word for slope, used in sentences so that skiers can talk to each other while others get confused.

Piste Basher

(Jargon Rating= 1) - A machine that grooms the piste into a nice flat corduroy.

Piste Map

(Jargon Rating= 1) - Free map widely available. Shows all the pistes and ski lifts in the area

Plutonite

(Jargon Rating= 4) - Oakley's Plutonite® lens material is engineered to stop every wavelength of ultraviolet radiation, not just the lower energy form called "UVA". In fact, Plutonite® inherently blocks 100% of UVA, UVB, UVC and harmful blue light up to 400 nanometers. The protection is built into the lens material. It's not a thin surface coating that can become scratched, leaving your dilated pupils exposed to UV leaks. In addition, Oakley's patented XYZ Optics® technology maintains visual clarity for raked-back lens contours, so Oakley lenses can have extreme curves at the sides to maximize protection against harmful UV.

Polarization

(Jargon Rating= 1) - Polarization blocks the blinding glare that bounces off horizontal surfaces like roadways and water. Oakley uses an injection-molding process to infuse the lens material around the polarizing filter.

POM

(Jargon Rating= 0) - Polyoxymethylene, also known as acetal resin, polytrioxane, polyformaldehyde, and paraformaldehyde, is an engineering plastic used to make gears, bushings and other mechanical parts (cf. nylon, teflon, UHMWPE). The most important polyacetal resin, it is a thermoplastic with good physical and processing properties.

Powder Board

(Jargon Rating= 1) - A snowboard especially designed to be used in deep powder. Usually features a deep V shaped cut into the tail of the board. This causes the back of the board to sink into the snow, but in doing so causes the front of the board to rise, exactly what is needed in deep powder. The board is generally useless on any other surface. See flotation.

Powder Snow

(Jargon Rating= 0) - Powder Snow was the second album by Megumi Odaka (1989). See Powder Board and Snow... with this you should be able to make a rough interpretation of the definition.

Power Triangle

(Jargon Rating= 4) - The core of every Flow binding is the patented Power Triangle technology. The Power Triangle consists of three elements: The structural baseplate, the highback and most importantly the high tension cable form the three sides. The cable directly transfers energy from the highback to the baseplate.

Powerbridge Technology

(Jargon Rating= 6) - The technological highlight of the Atomic collection for 2006/2007 is the newly developed Powerbridge designed especially for high-performance racing. The Powerbridge, the chassis of which freely glides forward and backward on the ski, guarantees a direct transmission of power, unsurpassed edge grip and thus maximum control in all phases of the turn. The connection between the boot and the binding has no negative impact on the natural flex of the ski. The free flex of the ski thus permits neutral handling characteristics. The system works like a spring plate throughout all phases of a turn. The plate uses the friction that is generated to dampen blows, letting the skier ride precise curves. At the end of the curve, the spring relaxes giving a powerful rebound for the maximum dynamics at high speeds.

Pre Track

(Jargon Rating= 6) - By taking the widest point of the ski up into the tip and/or tail lift, Pre Track allows the effective edge to vary from a short radius on groomed slopes to a longer effective edge when making bigger turns or skiing off-piste, making the ski more precise, stable, reliable and versatile.

Prismatic Imbalance

(Jargon Rating= 4) - This Oakley term measures the difference in "light bending" done by the right lens versus the left. If one lens bends light more than the other, your brain works harder to put the image together. I suppose it could also be the definition of a Prism that's been drinking all night...

Prismatic Power

(Jargon Rating= 4) - This test measures how much a lens bends light. With inferior lenses, light rays approach your eye at a false angle. That makes objects appear slightly shifted from their true position. Be careful though, sometimes things can seem very close up, but actually they're just very big.

Pro Baseplate

(Jargon Rating= 3) - The Flow Pro baseplate is engineered with a more responsive material that consists of 33% fibreglass and reinforced nylon for structural strength and a rockered baseplate that allows for true board flex. Dual density heel and toe pads provide enhanced shock absorption and allows the baseplate to be adjusted for length. Flow's new base pad dampens vibration under foot and cleanly integrates binding to the board.

Pro Tip

(Jargon Rating= 7) - The Progressive (Pro) tip controls tip deflection on the skis by using a progressive tip height radius. Skis with Pro tip are driven by perfect flex and predictable tip behaviour during turns.

PTP

(Jargon Rating= 6) - A new generation of boots, perfectly adapted to the shaped skis & directly inspired by the evolution of the way of skiing. Verse & Ellipse have been developed on 2 main basis : put hard material where its needed, add the right material at the right place.

Puls Ti

(Jargon Rating= 6) - Titanium-Pulser- Titanium Pulsers are embedded in the Beta Profile at the tip and tail of the Atomic skis by flexible Iso-Zorb elements. The use of high-quality titanium for maximum shock absorption ensures excellent ski controls in all situations.

R

Race Finish

(Jargon Rating= 6) - All skis with racing finish have side edges ground at 89° and base edges ground between 0.5° and 0.8°. The base is finished with a CNC stone grind to give it a micro structure. Precision base grinding and edge bevels are combined for exceptional performance.

Reclining Highback

(Jargon Rating= 4)- Flow's Original Reclining Highback offers riders a quick entry and exit system. In-Up-Go Technology gets you off the lift and ready to ride faster than any other binding on the market.

Refractive Power

(Jargon Rating= 4)- Non-prescription lenses shouldn't pretend to be prescription. But they do. Any lens can change the magnification of an image. It's like wearing corrective lenses when there's nothing to correct.

Rhythm Core

(Jargon Rating= 5)- For women K2 has designed a core that is softer flexing and lighter in the tip and tail, intended to work better with a women's body. Two distinct wood species are used in precise areas within the core to ensure easy turn initiation and lightweight characteristics combined with control, predictability and stability.

You take skis or board off to ride up in cable cars (some of which can hold up to around 150 people) and gondolas (small cable cars which you usually sit in). With drag lifts you slide up the mountain with the help of a bar or circular disk you put behind your bum - these are the most difficult to master.

Ski Patrollers

(Jargon Rating= 2) - Officials who are responsible for making the slopes safe from avalanches, marking hazards such as bare patches of ground and helping bring injured skiers down the mountain. They also sweep the slopes at the end of the day to ensure no-one is left stranded up the mountain.

Slalom

(Jargon Rating= 4) - Refers to a sport in which participants attempt to complete a course, in the fastest time, while passing through marked channels known as gates. Failing to pass through a gate incurs disqualification. The word slalom originates from the Norwegian word slalåm: "sla," meaning steep hillside, and "låm," meaning the trail after the skis. There are many gates and turns. Slalom and Giant Slalom are two vary similar sports but Giant slalom does not have many turns and the turns are very wide.

This process consists of sending a milled wood core through a patented Triaxial Braiding machine, where the core is wrapped by interlocking strands of fiberglass. This unique method produces skis with a great deal of torsional rigidity and strength, while retaining all the lively characteristics of a wood-core ski.

Triple Zone Lacing

(Jargon Rating= 3) - Three zones of lacing for quicker fitting.

True Stance Side-cut

(Jargon Rating= 5) - Built for riding forward and switch identically. A gentle radius in tip and tail meet in a tighter radius in the centre so it tracks straight on transitions without compromising turn ability – the more you commit to a turn the quicker you accelerate through it.

Twin Prog Sidecut

(Jargon Rating= 3) - When a man and woman love each other very much and they might decide to show their love by making a baby. In turn this may eventually mean that the man buys his son/daughter a ski or perhaps even a snowboard... If this snowboard is for freestyle purposes, it would work better if both ends of the board had the same width, some would call this a true twin tip. A twin prog sidecut board can be used in either direction to enhance free styling performance!

Twin Tip

(Jargon Rating= 1) - Twin-tip skis, also known as freestyle. Twintip skis, are skis with turned-up ends at both the front and rear. Twin tip skis make it easier to ski with ones back facing downhill, allowing reversed take-offs and landings when performing aerial manoeuvres. The turned up tail allows less application of aft pressure on the ski causing it to release from a turn earlier than a non-twin tip ski. Twin tip skis are generally wider at the tip, tail, and underfoot and constructed of softer materials to cushion landings. Bindings are typically mounted closer to the centre of the ski to facilitate the balance of fore and aft pressure while skiing backwards or "switch". The popularity explosion of twin tip skis created a push for the inclusion of more "terrain park" elements at ski areas across the globe. In the past five years twin tips have become popular among youth skiers, ages 14-21. Once considered a passing fad, twin tip skis have become a staple ski in the product line of all major ski producing companies word-wide with a few specialising in only twin tips.

Unobtainium

(Jargon Rating= 7) - Unobtainium is a colloquial term, used to describe any material that has properties that are considered unlikely or impossible for any real material and thus thought to be unobtainable. Oakley, Inc. has trademarked the word Unobtanium to refer to a rubber compound used on the frames of their sunglasses. This compound is designed to grip the nose and temples when it becomes wet with perspiration. Also popular is the Oakley Unimpossiblous.

UV Protection

(Jargon Rating= 2) - Protection against ultraviolet light has nothing to do with lens colour. The protection is built into Oakley's Plutonite® lens material, so full UV filtering is a standard feature with all Oakley lenses, no matter what the hue. Even clear Oakley lenses block 100% of UVA, UVB, UVC and harmful blue light. The raked-back curvature of Oakley eyewear provides further protection by blocking UV from the periphery. It's the equivalent of tiny little army men fighting the incoming missionaries which are the UV rays.

VED

(Jargon Rating= 8) - VED Visco-Elastic Dampening. Located in front of and behind the binding mounting area, a visco-elastic element is incorporated into the structure of the ski to absorb vibration generated by icy conditions or surface variations. The VED creates an effective vibration dampening system (reducing "chatter"), keeping the ski in optimal contact with the snow.

Velcro

(Jargon Rating= 1) - One lovely summer day in 1948, a Swiss amateur-mountaineer and inventor decided to take his dog for a nature hike. The man and his faithful companion both returned home covered with burrs, the plant seed-sacs that cling to animal fur in order to travel to fertile new planting grounds. The man neglected his matted dog, and with a burning curiosity ran to his microscope and inspected one of the many burrs stuck to his pants. He saw all the small hooks that enabled the seed-bearing burr to cling so viciously to the tiny loops in the fabric of his pants. George de Mestral raised his head from the microscope and smiled thinking, "I will design a unique, two-sided fastener, one side with stiff hooks like the burrs and the other side with soft loops like the fabric of my pants. I will call my invention 'velcro' a combination of the word velour and crochet. It will rival the zipper in its ability to fasten."

Xoombing

(Jargon Rating= 7) - Not quite a sport and not quite not a sport. Xoombing was created by the ledgedary Harold Xoom. A complicated process of spinning a monkey into a goal using only your right hand and left foot. When the word 'Xoom' is yelled out, you officially gain one 'richtor.' If the word 'penile' is said at any point in the game, three 'counter richtors' are forced upon one of the seven other team mates. The sport is usually played in the Autumn when the air is said to be moistened. A really extreme sport for only the spiritiest of men or fattest of women.

XYZ Optics

(Jargon Rating= 5) - Oakley's patented XYZ Optics® maintains visual clarity at all angles of view, even at the edge of raked-back lens contours that maximize peripheral vision and protection. Conventional eyewear bends light rays and distorts vision at the lens periphery, but XYZ Optics® maps the full lens contour to the human eye, ensuring razor-sharp vision at all angles.
